ADAMITE belongs to the arsenate group. It contains arsenic, zinc, and sometimes copper and cobalt. Its chemical formula is Zn 2 AsO 4 (OH).
Its density is 4.4 (1 for water) and its hardness reaches 3.5/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond). The line on porcelain is white.
ADAMITE generally occurs as elongated, tabular, or massive, rounded, or even spherical crystals. The crystals are green, yellow, purple, or pinkish in color. It was discovered by the mineralogist G. Adam. ADAMITE is different from Cuproadamite, which is green (copper), and Cobaltoadamite, which is purple (cobalt). ADAMITE sometimes fluoresces under UV light.
The name Adamite comes from the name of the French mineralogist GJ Adam.
