Hematite
Hematite belongs to the oxide group. It mainly contains iron. Its chemical formula is Fe2O3 .
Apart from the massive form, Hematite has tabular, scaly or mammillated (reniform) crystals.
Hematite is metallic grey in colour but produces a red streak on porcelain. Its hardness is greater than 5/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density varies between 5.2 and 5.3 (1 for water).
Oligist hematite is a variety with few faces, while specular hematite is a variety of large, amorphous, and shiny crystals. Some specimens resemble desert roses and are called iron roses.
The name Hematite comes from the Greek word haima which means blood .
