Aerinite belongs to the silicate group. It contains calcium, aluminum, iron, magnesium, carbon, and silicon. Its chemical formula is Ca4(Al,Fe,Mg)10Si12O35(OH)12CO3·12H2O.

Aerinite occurs as fibrous aggregates or as a crusty coating in a blue or blue-green color. Aerinite has a hardness of 3/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and a density greater than 2.4 (1 for water). The streak on the porcelain is turquoise blue.

The name Aerinite comes from the Greek word aerinos which means sky blue.
