CALCITE belongs to the carbonate group and contains calcium and carbon. Its chemical formula is CaCO 3 , exactly the same as that of Aragonite or Limestone.
It is a calcium carbonate. Calcite occurs in a massive or crystallized form with a beautiful development of crystals that are found in various facies, dendritic, crested, nailhead, sandy, dog tooth... The hardness is equal to 3/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and the density has an average value of 2.7 (1 for water). The line on the porcelain is white.
Calcite has a glassy luster and feels soft to the touch. It comes in several color variations: brown, red, green, blue, yellow, and colorless. Transparent specimens have a birefringence property and therefore reflect a double image. The name comes from the Latin calx , which means lime .
