CELESTINE or CELESTITE belongs to the sulfate group. It contains strontium and sulfur. Its chemical formula is SrSO4.
It occurs in massive form, in aggregate or in very fragile, well-developed translucent crystals.
CELESTINE is most often sky blue, blue-grey, colorless, or white. Its hardness varies between 3 and 3.5/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density is slightly less than 4 (1 for water). The line on the porcelain is white.
The name Celestine comes from the Latin word coeletis and means celestial.
