DUMORTIERITE usually occurs massively, but can also develop groups of radiating crystals. Its color ranges from red to blue and greenish specimens are also encountered. The hardness of Dumortierite is high, greater than 7/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its average density is 3.3 (1 for water). The line on the porcelain is white.
DUMORTIERITE owes its name to the French paleontologist Eugène Dumortier.
