Gypsum belongs to the sulfate group. It contains calcium and sulfur. Its chemical formula is CaSO 4 .2H 2 O.
Its crystals come in several forms, tabular, lamellar, prismatic and when they are translucent take the name of Selenite. Impurities give it beautiful brown, red-brown, yellow, gray or orange colors.
The hardness of gypsum is low, equal to 2/10, just higher than that of talc. Its density is equal to 2.3 (1 for water). The line on the porcelain is white.
The massive variety is called Alabaster and allows for fine carving of sculptures which nevertheless remain very fragile.
GYPSUM is widely used in the production of plaster.
