HEMATITE belongs to the group of oxides. It contains mainly iron. Its chemical formula is Fe 2 O 3 .
Apart from the massive form, Hematite presents tabular, scale-like or mound-shaped (kidney-like) crystals.
Hematite is metallic gray in color but produces a red streak on porcelain. Its hardness is greater than 5/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its specific gravity varies between 5.2 and 5.3 (1 for water).
Oligistic hematite is a variety with few faces, while specularite hematite is a variety of large, shapeless, shiny crystals. Some specimens resemble sand roses and are called iron roses.
The name Hematite comes from the Greek word haima which means blood .
