Nephrite Jade belongs to the group of silicates. It contains calcium, magnesium, iron and silicon. Its chemical formula is Ca 2 (Mg,Fe) 5 (Si 8 O 22 )(OH) 2 .
Nephrite mined in China is one of two minerals that bear the name JADE, along with Jadeite mined in South and Central America and Myanmar (Burma). Nephrite has a massive, fibrous form. Its color varies from dark green to gray to beige. Its hardness is greater than 6/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamonds) and its density varies around 3.1 (1 for water). The line on porcelain is white.
The name Nephrite comes from the Greek nephros and means kidney , in the sense that this stone would relieve this part of the body.

SERPENTINE belongs to the silicate group. It contains magnesium, iron, nickel and silicon. Its chemical formula is (Mg,Fe,Ni) 3 Si 2 O 5 (OH) 4 .
It usually occurs in massive form.
The color of SERPENTINE is most often in shades of green with a marbled appearance. Its hardness varies around 4/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density is greater than 2.5 (1 for water). The line on porcelain is white.
The name Serpentine comes from the Latin word serpens and means snake .

HEMATITE belongs to the group of oxides. It contains mainly iron. Its chemical formula is Fe 2 O 3 .
Apart from the massive form, Hematite presents tabular, scale-like or mound-shaped (kidney-like) crystals.
Hematite is metallic gray in color but produces a red streak on porcelain. Its hardness is greater than 5/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its specific gravity varies between 5.2 and 5.3 (1 for water).
Oligistic hematite is a variety with few faces, while specularite hematite is a variety of large, shapeless, shiny crystals. Some specimens resemble sand roses and are called iron roses.
The name Hematite comes from the Greek word haima which means blood .
