Ruby typically occurs as elongated crystals with striated prismatic faces when crystallized.
Ruby and sapphire belong to the same family.
Its red color comes from the presence of chromium oxide. Ruby and sapphire have a hardness of 9/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and a density greater than 4 (1 for water). The streak on porcelain is colorless.
The name Ruby comes from the Latin word rubeus which means red.
Its color is generally black, brown, light yellow to leather, or bronze. Biotite's hardness is not very high, between 2.5 and 3/10, and its density varies between 2.7 and 3.4 (1 for water) due to the varying proportions of its chemical components. The streak on the porcelain is white.
The name Biotite comes from Jean-Baptiste Biot, a French physicist who studied the optical properties of Micas.
