Muscovite occurs as flat, roughly hexagonal crystals. It is the mineral commonly known as "mica."
Its color is usually white, yellow, or pinkish-brown. The hardness of Muscovite ranges from 2 to 2.5/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond), and its average density is slightly less than 2.8 (1 for water). The line on porcelain is almost colorless.
The name Muscovite comes from the British name for the city of Moscow.
