PREHNITE belongs to the silicate group. It contains calcium, aluminum, and silicon. Its chemical formula is Ca2Al2Si3O10(OH)2.
PREHNITE occurs as aggregate, fine stalactitic crystals, tabular crystals, or most commonly as spherical or hummocky green masses. PREHNITE is often associated with Apophyllite, Stilbite, Epidote, and Okenite.
Prehnite has a hardness greater than 6/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and a density of 2.9 (1 for water). The line on porcelain is white.
The name Prehnite comes from the name of a Dutch officer H. von Prehn.
