Pyrite belongs to the sulfide group. It contains iron and sulfur. It occurs in the form of aggregates, large cubic or dodecahedral crystals, giving off golden metallic reflections. Pyrite has often been confused with gold, hence its name "fool's gold."

HEMATITE belongs to the group of oxides. It mainly contains iron.

When it appears as coarse crystals that reflect light, it is called specularite. Some specimens resemble sand roses and are called iron roses.
HEMATITE is black in color and produces a red streak on porcelain.
