TURQUOISE belongs to the phosphate group and contains copper, aluminum and phosphorus. Its chemical formula is CuAl 6 (PO 4 ) 4 (OH) 8 .4H 2 O.

TURQUOISE generally occurs in a massive or microcrystalline form with little crystal development. It is a fragile gemstone whose dehydration must be monitored. Its hardness varies between 5 and 6/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density oscillates between 2.6 and 2.8 (1 for water). The line on porcelain is white.

It is copper that is responsible for its beautiful shade of blue to green.

The name Turquoise comes from the name Turkey.
