Amethyst belongs to the silicate group. It mainly contains silicon. Its chemical formula is the same as that of Quartz or Agate, SiO 2 .
It is a variety of Quartz with a purple color due to the iron it contains. The yellow AMETHYST is called citrine.
The hardness of Amethyst is 7/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density is 2.7 (1 for water). The line on porcelain is white.
Amethyst is usually found in geodes and those from Brazil produce large pyramidal crystals, while those from Uruguay are deep purple and smaller.
Some AMETHYSTS have particularities such as "cactus" formations (growth of crystals in height with a secondary crystallization of small crystals), "flower" formation (crystals developed in all directions), "hedgehog" formation (domed chalcedony base with development of crystals). The Amethyst named "Vera Cruz" has the particularity of long, thin, translucent crystals tinged with purple.
The name Amethyst comes from the Greek word amethustos and means against drunkenness .
