APATITE belongs to the phosphate group. It contains phosphate, calcium, and fluorine or hydroxide or chlorine. Its chemical formula is Ca5(PO4)3(F,OH,Cl).
Depending on the presence of one of these last three elements, APATITE will be called fluorapatite, hydroxylapatite or chlorapatite.
APATITE generally occurs as prismatic crystals of a wide variety of colors. Its hardness is 5/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density varies between 2.1 and 2.2 (1 for water). The line on porcelain is white.
The name Apatite comes from the Greek word apatan which means to deceive.
