APOPHYLLITE belongs to the silicate group. It contains fluorine or hydroxide, potassium, calcium, silicon, and water. Its chemical formula is KCa 4 Si 8 O 2 O (F,OH).8H 2 O.
Apophyllite usually occurs in tabular or prismatic crystals. It is often associated with Stilbite. Like Stilbite, Apophyllite is a member of the zeolites (a group of minerals whose porous structure is essentially composed of aluminosilicate and water molecules. Thus, when a zeolite is heated, the crystals bend as the water evaporates).
The average hardness of Apophyllite ranges from 4.5 to 5/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density ranges from 2.3 to 2.4 (1 for water). The line on porcelain is white or colorless.
Apophyllite is usually white but also comes in colorless, green, yellow, or red.
The name Apophyllite comes from the Greek word apophullisa which means to peel (related to the property of zeolites).
SCOLECITE belongs to the silicate group. It contains calcium, aluminum, and silicon. Its chemical formula is CaAl 2 Si 3 O 10 .3H 2 O.
It appears in the form of elongated prism-shaped crystals.
The color of SCOLECITE is generally white. Its density is less than 2.4 (1 for water) and its hardness is greater than 5/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond). The line on porcelain is colorless.
Its name comes from the Greek scoliaxo because its crystals bend when exposed to high temperatures, a phenomenon that can be observed for all zeolites, minerals containing water.
