It is a compact cryptocrystalline variety of Quartz because the crystals are so small that it is difficult to see them. Chalcedony occurs in massive, hummocky, columnar or stalactitic forms. It is a very hard stone. Agate and Onyx are a zoned variety.
Its color is generally white, but depending on the impurities it contains, it is also found in red, purple, black or blue.
Chalcedony's hardness is 7/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density varies from 2.6 to 2.7 (1 for water). The line on porcelain is white.
The name Chalcedony comes from the name of the ancient Greek city Chalcedon.
