ANDALUSITE or CHIASTOLITE belongs to the silicate group. It contains aluminum and silicon. Its chemical formula is Al 2 OSiO 5 .
It occurs in massive form or in elongated crystals. The characteristic of Chiastolite is the symmetrical black cross that appears on most samples and which also gave its name to this mineral. Andalusite is most often brown in color.
The hardness of Andalusite ranges from 6.5 to 7.5/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density is greater than 3.1 (1 for water). The line on the porcelain is white.
The name Andalusia comes from the name of the Spanish province of Andalusia .
