Grossular garnets belong to the silicate group and the garnet family. They are calcium aluminosilicates with the formula Ca3Al2(SiO4)3.
Garnets belong to the silicate group. There are about fifteen species. Depending on the case, they will contain manganese, magnesium, aluminum, iron, calcium, chromium, titanium, zirconium, vanadium, or silicon.
Garnets are usually green or brown in color, but they also come in a variety of colors and are even colorless. Garnets are most often dodecahedral or trapezoidal in shape. Grossulars are green to red and their name comes from the Latin meaning "currant" in analogy with the color of this ripe or unripe fruit. They contain calcium, aluminum and silicon. In Garnets Andradites iron replaces aluminum, and combines with calcium and silicon. Black andradites are called melanite . In uvarovite garnets, chromium replaces aluminum. Almandine garnets contain iron, silicon, and aluminum, while spessartite is made up of manganese, silicon, and aluminum. Grossular garnets are made up of calcium, aluminum, and silicon. The brown variety is called hessonite garnet .
The etymology of the word Garnet comes from the Latin "malum granatum" which means "pomegranate".
