Bloodstone, also known as heliotrope or sanguine, belongs to the silicate group. It is primarily composed of silicon and has the same chemical formula as quartz or amethyst. It is a variety of chalcedony. Heliotrope occurs as a massive, microcrystalline, dark-colored stone with red spots due to hematite. It is a very hard stone. The red color of bloodstone comes from hematite, and the green from iron silicate.
