Jet is a variety of lignite, a rock made up of successive deposits of fossilized plants and containing more than 70% carbon.

In this respect, jet can be considered as coal. Its hardness of 2.5/10 (10 for diamond) makes it easy to polish and work, especially as jewelry. Its density of 1.3 is slightly higher than that of water (1 for water). The jet line on porcelain is very dark brown.
