OBSIDIAN is a rock of volcanic origin, essentially formed of silica. Its chemical formula is almost entirely silicon dioxide SiO 2 associated with other elements such as iron or manganese.
OBSIDIAN forms during lava flows and, after solidification, gives a vitreous structure like thick, roughly cut glass.
Its main characteristics are its hardness and its sharpness (conchoidal fracture) which will find a natural use during prehistory as a tool or as a weapon (knife blades or arrowheads).
OBSIDIAN is generally a shiny, intense black color, but can also be green or brown depending on the varying proportion of iron it contains.
Its hardness is around 5/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density is 2.4 (1 for water). Obsidian leaves no visible trace on porcelain.
It is a volcanic glass and an amorphous mineral without crystallization due to the rapid cooling of the lava.
White spherulites, a formation of needle-like crystals, produce Snowflake Obsidian . Tiny gas bubbles trapped during the cooling of the lava produce reflections and produce Golden Obsidian. Obsidians with rainbow reflections are called Celestial Eye.
