OBSIDIAN is a rock of volcanic origin, essentially formed of silica. Its main characteristics are its hardness and its sharpness (natural conchoidal fracture) which will find it used during prehistory as a tool or as a weapon (knife blades or arrowheads). OBSIDIAN is generally of an intense shiny black color. White spherulites formed of acicular crystals give Snowflake Obsidian. Obsidians with rainbow reflections are called Celestial Eye .
