Pyrite belongs to the sulfide group. It contains iron and sulfur. It is an iron disulfide. Its chemical formula is FeS2.
It occurs in the form of aggregate in its raw form, giving golden metallic reflections. In its crystallized form, we find crystals most often cubic of good size and more rarely octahedral or dodecahedral. Marcasite has the same chemical formula as Pyrite but with a different crystallization.
Pyrite has a hardness greater than 6/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and a density of 5 (1 for water). The line on porcelain is black.
Pyrite has the same chemical formula as Marcasite, but the latter has a radiant crystallization. Due to its golden metallic luster, Pyrite has often been mistaken for gold. The name Pyrite comes from the Greek word pur, meaning fire.
