QUARTZ belongs to the silicate group. It mainly contains silicon. Its chemical formula is SiO2.
It appears in massive form or prismatic crystals. Depending on the impurities it contains, this mineral displays various colors such as pink, yellow, red, brown, purple or black and is also found in colorless form.
It is a very common mineral found in almost all types of rock. Morion Quartz owes its color to impurities reacting with the radioactivity released by certain minerals such as Torbernite.
Hematoid Quartz contains iron, which gives it a beautiful orange-red color. Rose Quartz owes its color to its manganese or titanium content, or to micro-inclusions of Dumortierite.
The hardness of Quartz on the Mohs scale is 7/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density is 2.7 (1 for water). The line is white or colorless.
The name Quartz comes from German.

REALGAR belongs to the sulfide group. It contains arsenic and sulfur. Its chemical formula is close to that of orpiment, AsS.
It usually occurs in a massive form but rare small crystals exist in prismatic form.
Its color is bright red, as is the line obtained on porcelain. The density of Realgar is 3.6 (1 for water) and its very low hardness is less than 2/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond).
It is not uncommon to find a yellow mineral, Orpiment, associated with it. Realgar must be kept away from light, otherwise it disintegrates into a yellow powder consisting mainly of ORPIMENT.
The name Realgar comes from an Arabic word meaning cave powder.
