SERPENTINE belongs to the silicate group. It contains magnesium, iron, nickel and silicon. Its chemical formula is (Mg,Fe,Ni)3Si2O5(OH)4.
It usually occurs in massive form.
The color of SERPENTINE is most often in shades of green with a marbled appearance. Its hardness varies around 4/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density is greater than 2.5 (1 for water). The line on porcelain is white.

The name Serpentine comes from the Latin word serpens and means snake.
