Calcite occurs in a massive or crystallized form with a beautiful development of crystals that are found in various facies, dendritic, crested, nailhead, sandy, dog tooth... Calcite has a glassy luster and feels soft to the touch. It comes in several color variations: brown, red, green, blue, yellow, and colorless. Transparent specimens have a birefringence property and therefore reflect a double image. The name comes from the Latin "calx," which means lime.
