TREMOLITE belongs to the group of silicates. It contains calcium, magnesium, iron and silicon. Its chemical formula is Ca 2 Mg 5 [Si 4 O 11 (OH,F)] 2 .
When the proportion of iron is greater than that of magnesium, Tremolite takes the term Actinolite.
Its density varies between 3.0 and 3.4 (1 for water) and its hardness varies from 5 to 6/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond). The line on porcelain is white.
Tremolite usually occurs as large crystals with long, radiating, parallel, and capillary prisms. It is a variety of asbestos. Its color varies between white, gray-green, and gray.
Its name comes from the place of its discovery, the Trémola Valley in the Alps.
