UVAROVITE is the rarest garnet. It contains calcium, silicon and chromium, which are responsible for its dark green color. Its chemical formula is Ca 3 Cr 2 (SiO 4 ) 3 .
The size of Uvarovite crystals is always small and they are found gathered in a crust.
Garnets belong to the silicate group. There are about fifteen species. Depending on the case, they will contain manganese, magnesium, aluminum, iron, calcium, chromium, titanium, zirconium, vanadium, or silicon.
The hardness is less than 7/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density is 3.7 (1 for water). The line on porcelain is white.
The word Uvarovite comes from the name of the Russian minister Uvarov while the etymology of the word Garnet comes from the Latin "malum granatum" which means "pomegranate".
