Thomsonite belongs to the silicate group. It contains calcium, sodium, aluminum , and silicon. Its chemical formula is NaCa2 ( Al5Si5O2O ) .6H2O .
Thomsonite occurs as acicular crystals in sheets, blocks, or spheres. It belongs to the zeolite group (a group of minerals whose porous structure is essentially composed of aluminosilicate and water molecules. Thus, when a zeolite is heated, the crystals bend as the water evaporates).
Its color is usually white, but Thomsonite can also be found in red, orange, pink, or yellow. Thomsonite has a hardness greater than 5/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond) and its density varies between 2.3 and 2.4 (1 for water). The streak on the porcelain is white.
Its name comes from the Scottish chemist Thomson.
