EMERALD is the green variety of BERYL, it belongs to the group of silicates-cyclosilicates. EMERALD contains berylium, aluminum and silicon. Its chemical formula is Be3Al2Si6O18.
EMERALD generally occurs in a massive form and its crystals are prismatic. Its intense green color is due to the presence of chromium. EMERALD Beryl has been used in jewelry since the dawn of time. Its density varies between 2.6 and 3/10 (1 for water) and its hardness approaches 8/10 on the Mohs scale (10 for diamond and 7 for quartz). The line on porcelain is white. Aquamarine, Morganite, Goshenite or Heliodor are other varieties of Beryl.
