GARNIERITE belongs to the group of silicates, phyllosilicates. It contains nickel, magnesium and silicon. Its chemical formula is (Ni,Mg)6[Si4O10](OH)8.
Garnierite appears as amorphous aggregates of light green to dark green color depending on the quantity of nickel contained (15 to 30%).

Garnierite has an average hardness of 3/10 and a density of over 2.1 (1 for water). The line on the porcelain is light green.

Mainly a source of nickel ore, Garnierite owes its name to the French engineer Garnier.
