Gypsum belongs to the sulfate group. It contains calcium and sulfur. Its chemical formula is CaSO4.2H2O.

Its crystals come in several forms, tabular, lamellar, prismatic. Impurities give it beautiful brown, red-brown, yellow, gray or orange colors.

The hardness of gypsum is low, equal to 2/10, just higher than that of talc. Its density is equal to 2.3 (1 for water). The line on the porcelain is white.

The massive variety is called Alabaster and is used to finely carve sculptures which, however, remain very fragile.

GYPSUM is widely used in the production of plaster.
