Septaria is formed by the development of a network of limestone-filled fissures within a nodule. A nodule is a roughly spherical body, generally harder than the surrounding rock. A nodule is presented by sawing it in half and then polishing the internal surfaces to reveal the fissures. Septaria is most often gray-brown to black in color, with dark brown to white fissures.
